August 2025. Rickmansworth.
Yes, actually in August!
Straight home from our lodge in Richmond (by the by congrats to the Stable Yard for a dozen coffee sachets and NO decaf π), then 2 nights in Waterbeach, where the Brakspear Gravity is superb,

and then a day at Pembury Hospital A & E with the father-in-law, rather less pleasant.
We travel north via Heathrow and the M1, which at least gives me a GBG debutant in Rickmansworth.

I used to work close to Ricky, helping close the giant learning disability “hospitals” that dominated north Watford, but rarely ventured here.
It’s taken, inevitably, a craft bar to give it a Guide pub,

though Wishful Drinking sounds more like one of those Irish pubs that you found in South Herts.

Not my favourite pub type, you’ll spot why,

but the beer was fantastic, even if it wasn’t cask.

Vibrant Forest and Mad Squirrel your classy murk.
I resisted nicking the scratchings at the bar,

and admired the art.

It’s really brought the youngsters into the high street,

but Mrs RM was more drawn to the frenetic courtyard of the Fox & Hounds, where a Spice Girls tribute duo was holding court.
Ricky is a Spice Girls tribute sort of town, but now it’s got craft as well.

I’m surprised you ventured into Rickmansworth without trying out the town’s Spoon, The Pensylvanian, slapbang in the High Street.
In the grand gallery of ‘Spoons, it’s among the best, never serving me a pint that fully passed muster.
Mrs RM made a good choice with the Fox and Hounds but, for the dozen or do times a year that I find myself in Ricky, it’s The Pensylvanian for me.

Flying stop on way home, or I’d have brought you Ricky’s many cultural highlights, including the Pensylvanian (which may be the only pub I’d been in the town). No, I didn’t let Mrs RM go in the Fox and Hounds, just briefly admire two lasses murder “Wannabe” in the pub garden.
