June 2025. Corbridge.

1 tick down, 2 more to go in tiny Corbridge, and then a mile sprint back to the station with a tummy full of curry.
Mrs RM was not impressed. She was also done for the night, sitting out the Pele, possibly the only pub in the GBG named after a footballer best known as an ambassador for erectile dysfunction.

Are there any other Guide entries as quirky as this ?
I should know, if anyone, really.

Karen and Jane explored the 3 floors,

and if you’d asked me to pay £2.50 to visit this former ecclesiastical residence I’d have happily obliged.

The £2.50 spent on a wilting First and Last pale wasn’t such a good investment, but at least they’d provided the necessary in the street outside.

I blame the heat.
Corbridge looked wonderful, and one day I’ll do all half dozen pubs,

but tonight just three.
Sadly, the Wheatsheaf, which looked after Mrs RM during a snow storm that had her sliding down the A68 from the Scottish borders, hadn’t had a beer delivery in weeks.

So after a brief visual confirmation we stopped on the bridge over the Tyne.

Someone is about to tell me why we should/shouldn’t have gone in Dyvels.

Instead, we spent 7 minutes on the platform,

speculating as to why someone would abandon their dressing gown at the station.
Are there any other Guide entries as quirky as this ? – The Llanthony Priory Hotel comes to mind.

My wife, daughter and I stayed at the Dyvels for a night in October 2003.
Yes, a pub is for bed and breakfast, not just beer and lunch.

There was no cask at the wheatsheaf when I visited last at Easter!
I think the Dyvils is just a last pub/beer garden before the train back to toon. Again, no cask there.
The Blue Bell is a friendly locals sort of place, especially the toon lounge!

We saw a very traditional folk band in the Pele a couple of years ago -all beards, sandals & guitars -I could hardly keep a straight face but it was a perfect setting for this ! The stairs frightened me

I’d have enjoyed that ! The Pele had a lot going for it, a shame the real ale was suffering in the heat.

If I am totally honest we did rather enjoy it -it was just what people expect a folk band to look like & they were quite good. Most of the music we go to watch these days is folk which tends to be more affordable -last gig we went to was in the Caroline club in Saltaire -a scottish band called Breabach ,who we have seen before at Kings Place in London. The club was perfect too -built in the 60’s & hadn’t changed much since -good selection of beer too.

If I’d known it was Peel, not Pele, I’d have called the post “Ravenscroft”.
