June 2025. Glossop.

A favour for Matt (who turned 24 on Sunday !) meant a quick pint in Glossop, home to some of the Dark Peak’s best views,

and a classic pub right on the door of the station.

The publican of The Star had expressed some astonishment I could buy Jaipur in Spoons cheaper than he can buy it for his pub, and I reckoned I owned them a return visit as I hate to admit not remembering a pub.
I’m greeted with Tanita,
a rare blast of ’88 pop, and a solid line of cask being dominated by Boltmaker.

A dozen in, trad seating, trad welcome, cool crisp beer (NBSS 4) in the June heatwave.

A touch of Stockport about the interior, but the OS map is pure Peak. Or has Stockport claimed that as well now ?

Blimey. That went down quick. Better than Landlord.

I keep telling Mrs RM we should have another luxurious night in Glossop Travelodge. Prices have gone up a tad since our romantic break from the lads a decade ago, but we could stretch to a Sunday;

A good half dozen or so pubs, that posh wine place, vegan curry, and if I’m very lucky;
Bass in the Star. How did I miss that !
Ted Hughes had the right idea about millstone grit views, and fled to Rutland, I think.
We digress though, and here’s some hard-to-find-these-days good news.

I’m waiting for someone to say it’s not the original Jennings brewery kit so they shouldn’t call it Jennings. Very hot on “provenance” (ugh).

I’ll be happy if they get fairly close to what I remember the beers to have tasted like.

Haven’t been to Glossop for years. Thanks for the suggestion!
