PUB WALKS FROM CLACKET LANE SERVICES. No. 2 – TITSEY BREWERY TAP

April 2025. Titley. Tastsfield. Surrey.

In 2017 I brought you the first instalment in my award-winning series “Pub Walks from Clacket Lane Services;, a visit to Botley Hill Farmhouse you could just about make within the 2 hours parking if you get a sprint on.

It’s taken 8 years, the duration of Donald Trump’s current presidency, but here at last in Episode 2, and it’s a cracker.

Leave your DES at Clacket Lane to get enjoy the free Wi-Fi and walk over the North Downs to Titsey’s tap, where you’ll find, well, this..

Actually we drove here on the way to the in-laws, attracted by a rare GBG tick and a late breakfast, the Fourwentways Travelodge only having one of those overpriced vending machines.

You know what a fan I am of modern brewery taps;

Titsey might be the poshest of the lot, and a contender for the most genteel entry in the GBG now that Maidenhead Cons Club has dropped out of the Guide.

What on earth is this ?

Meet Dawn-Edna, the designated EV charge point.

A few folk have driven the lanes from the angry Surrey towns of Oxted and Worlingham, but most of the trade is from cyclists sipping flat whites.

Yes, the key words here are lycra, homebrew and “avo bagel”.

The lads dutifully had their 11am pints of homebrew, something akin to that Penzance Potion No. 9 in flavour. “Is this what cask is supposed to taste like, Dad ?“.

But the staff were great, the views gorgeous, and the breakfast bagels tasty and filling.

Which was about to be a problem as we were heading to Southborough for Meow’s famous Chinese lunch.

  1. We occasionally come here after a visit to Chartwell (& when we are feeling flush too ) & found it full of the kind of folk you describe -we enjoyed it though & plan to return sometime in the summer when we can sit outside. We particularly enjoyed seeing a field full of horses next door & have recommended it to our sons horse mad partner (she’s called Camilla but we don’t hold it against her -she’s a lovely girl ) Pauline

    1. You’ve explained it better than I ever could, Pauline.

Those views and the food would encourage me to return some time with the in-laws.

The cask was very dull, might try the keg beers.

  2. In the days where I a) lived in London and b) was one of those Lycra-clad types who often cycled this part of the world, this place would have held plenty of appeal for a mid-ride coffee and cake/pastry/bagel, though I normally saved a beer for once I’d got myself back up and over Crystal Palace.
Not an original observation, but would be impressed if they’re getting lots of villagers in to shift cask in meaningful volume!

    1. Not original but spot on.

I can confidently say I’ve never seen their beers on my travels, so assume it’s largely trade at their Tap.

Compare that with the similarly upmarket Westerham Brewery tap over the M25.
