THE ABBOT IN CODICOTE’S GOAT IS THE “BEER OF THE GODS”

March 2025. Codicote. Hertfordshire.

We’re just back from Luton (Airport, oo-ee-oo), with quite a tale to tell, but before posts on Russian theme pubs and MoldovanTomato Gose, one last GBG tick in dear old England.

Time for a pint before an early flight, sadly not in luscious Luton itself, but in a village that’s eluded the GBG for as long as I’ve been ticking it.

Actually, I’m sure I did all of Codicote’s sturdy looking pubs when we lived up the road in Hitchin, but of course spreadsheets and pre-emptive ticks weren’t invented in the mid-90s.

Even if I have done the Goat 30 years ago, it’s worth popping in this white-boarded gem.

Still taking food orders at 3pm on a Monday, your actual afternoon drinkers trade,

classic Benskins sign,

cosy and rambling, cheery landlady and foreign coinage on the timbers (sadly, no Transnistrian pfennigs).

Mrs RM has a sip of the Abbot, the Landlord being too rare a pint for her.

Mmm, the beer of the gods” she says, too loudly, and I haven’t the heart to tell her it’s a solid 3.5, rather than one of those 5s that Will writes about.

She may be a over-generous beer scorer, but she’s still my GOAT.

      1. Tetchy? Me?
        Good heavens no.
I’m patient and conciliatory to a fault.
If you want tetchy, then go to a website where comments like this must be put in square brackets.

That said, even as a child watching Miss Great Britain, when Michael Aspel asked some beswimsuited bimba what she liked, and the inevitable Travel And Meeting People came back, I could never understand why he never followed with “Why???”

  1. Since I started beer scoring I’ve only had Abbot two or three times, and I don’t think any of them were 3.5. Does this mean I have to visit Codicote to make sure you haven’t been bribed?

I’m glad you got your pun on Goat polished. Nice one. 😁 Time well spent on the plane?

      1. Paul, I don’t keep a running tally but had pints of both Pedigree and Pride recently after a period of some time.

I’m happy to say that both were drinking ergatively.

      2. Etu, I had 58 Pedigree and 7 Pride last year, since you ask, that obviously being with living much nearer Burton than Chiswick. Running a tally aids moderation which is of course true temperance.
