ANOTHER SUNDAY NIGHT IN WATERBEACH

March 2025. Waterbeach.

I’m getting down to see Dad in his care home three times a week, and the most striking thing is his weight loss now he gets a balanced diet.

It does mean a few trips back and forth to Tesco with trousers that are still too small, but that’s OK, and being L rather than XXL seems A Good Thing.

I did a solo trip last weekend, solo bar this lot,

and left Mrs RM to sell off her collection of luggage bags.

I’d have taken the chance of a Sunday night ticking Carshalton, but something was wrong with the trains so it’s the old faithful I’m afraid.

A pint in the Sun and a Chung Hwa.

Helen had gone all exotic, a chewy ruby one from Mighty Oak,

classic southern head and all,

and then a rugby themed Porter from Tatton.

I’m not sure what’s more surprising; me drinking rugby themed beer of a great beer from Tatton.

Which it was. I told Helen, because if you don’t tell the publican their beer is good, who will ? Rarely less than 3.5, this was a 4.5. That matters.

Meanwhile at the Chung Hwa, consternation as I switched from the normal Spicy Squid to Salt & Pepper Squid.

It worries me they remember my regular order. But it’s good to have a change once in a while.

      1. I don’t know the Black Country anything like as well as I should. I think I’ve only once got a bus to Dudley, during June 2000 from Dudley Port railway station, though I have been to Kingswinford dozens of times with my wife driving us to and from the Woodman for its Friday evening folk club.

      2. I hadn’t even heard of Pensnett until Courage opened a depot there for the 1979 pub swaps.
Then a few years later there a piece of brick resembling a sycamore leaf wrecked my front cycle wheel.
