March 2025. Doncaster.
The driver did notice me waving frantically on the Saltmarshe platform, and 35 minutes later I was at Doncaster with a dilemma.
Sprint the 7 minutes each way to the Donny Brewery for a 10 minute pint schooner of “Gruesome Raspberry: Gravy is Finite”,

or stay put at the station pub.
What would Paul Mudge do ?

I would buy a book called “What Would Paul Mudge Do ?”.
He certainly wouldn’t get his beer in a takeaway milk bottle to drink on the 18:22, oh no.

He’d have a pint from one of Sheffield’s cask champions.

But a man doesn’t travel from South Yorkshire to South Yorkshire to drink South Yorkshire beers, so I had a pint from Tallinn.

And admired the seating in what is a lovely, but slightly too small, station pub.

The Pohjala was too carbonated, the pork and stilton pie sumptuous,

the soundtrack veered from Coldplay to Peter’s & Lee.

I wasn’t the only one singing “Welcome Home”.
“What would Paul Mudge do ?”
Well it was ten years ago, Friday 27th February 2015 to be precise, and only for about eighteen minutes and before 9am. I made the mistake of buying a Starbucks coffee and then asking myself if it was really coffee before deciding to avoid that bland in future which I have done.

I know that Wetherspoons at motorway service stations are a problem (Beaconsfield apart) for some but I’m sure they’d work well at major stations.

During the summer of 2016, whilst on holiday in Bavaria, I took a Deutsche Bahn “request stop” service out to Neufahrn, in order to visit the brewing nuns, at Kloster-Mallersdorf.
You can read about my trip, here. https://baileysbeerblog.blogspot.com/2016/10/klosterbrauerei-mallersdorf-and-brewing.html

A quick sprint to the Little Plough is highly recommended, with as few as 15 minutes to spare. (Actually, you could probably do it in 10 minutes – I’ve seen how dast you walk/drink, though to be fair not both at the same time. 🙂 ) A lovely pub, with four hand pumps and a heritage lounge at the back. If you don’t believe me, try these reviews on Pubs Galore (one of which is from me, of course):

Of course, you might have to drink beer from South Yorkshire, which I see you are now trying not to do.

I can’t argue with the “Little” Plough, Will. Except I was there 18 months ago so a bit recent. That Quinno knows his stuff, doesn’t he ?

Undoubtedly. Though I deprecate his habit of conflating his former review with his newer one, rather than leaving the earlier one in a historical sequence. But I lost that argument years ago…

I agree. You should join us on our future trip to Hinckley and tell him off.
