Don’t worry, I leave the musical critique to Chris Dyson. His review is probably more eclectic than mine, a few male artists !
But like Chris I still consume a lot of music; it’s just that music is different these days.
40 years ago I was spending about a grand, 20% of my first annual salary, on vinyl records, with a hundred quid on live music (mainly Maria McKee in Kentish Town from memory). And a lot of radio.

40 years later I spend ZERO on vinyl and CDs, about £40 on T-shirts, £20 a month on TIDAL streaming, and £500 on live music. And ZERO radio. Would I still be listening to Peel if he was alive ?
Most of that live music takes place in pubs and clubs, just like in 1985, with a weekend of standing behind blokes in flamingo shirts listening to shoegaze thrown in.

14 years on, End of the Road is my year’s highlight, though I always start from the bottom of the line-up rather than the headliners.
90% of my listening is to brand new stuff, entirely on and often recommended by, Tidal. I never play those 2,000 LPs collected as a teenager, so it’s just as well that collection is only 2,000 rather than the five it started as before Mrs RM got to work in 2004.
And here’s what I was listening to in 2024. I won’t bore you with words,

just go and listen to Lizzy and weep.
If you’re not careful they are going to start questioning you upon concert entry…

I haven’t listened to it yet, Pauline. Being stuck at my mums these last 6 months has scuppered playing new music at Amyl & the Snifters volume ! Chris Dyson says it’s great 👍

Billie Eilish, I know, the rest I’ve never heard of, but you probably knew that. All the same, full marks to both you and Chris Dyson for keeping the flag flying for new music.
I always read Chris’s posts, but for some reason Google, or whoever, won’t allow me to posts comments on his site. I’m not sufficiently tech savvy to find out why, or how to rectify the problem.

I’ve struggled to comment on Chris’s posts, too, Paul. And life’s too short to sort out technical problems sometimes.
Not sure you’ve met Chris, he hasn’t been on the old codgers trips but pops up in the north. You’d like him a lot.

Martin, I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Chris, although I would like to. Perhaps a codgers trip to Calderdale, later in the year, might facilitate a meet-up.

In fairness the only other singer I thought you might know is Charlie xcx, whose Brat slogan was adopted by Kamala Harris. She’s from Cambridge!
