DOING THE LAMBETH WALK, OI

October 2024. Kennington. SE1.

No, I skipped the Royal Oak, so I could hop back on the Northern Line and bring you highlights from NEW gems in South London.

Possibly.

I was still having to work out which were the new entries, but fairly sure Kennington’s Dog House was one of them.

By law, London’s pubs change names frequently just to confuse tickers.

Kennington hasn’t troubled the Guide much over the years, a Young’s pub on the way to the river a couple of years back I think the last time,

and it’s the element of discovery that’s half the fun.

Dogs welcome, humans tolerated, or summat.

Perhaps 3pm on a Wednesday in leafy Lambeth isn’t the time to find humans in pubs, just a couple of blokes determinedly NOT drinking the cask.

But I persevere, for you, with a pint of Brockley in a handled jug,

served by another lovely young Londoner who seems to apologise to me for my inability to use the contactless card reader.

I will always mention the friendliness of young bar staff to old boomers like me who have wrecked their lives and the planet, and I’ll always tell you the TRUTH about beer quality.

The Brockley could have done with more turnover (2.5), which is a shame, as the Dog House is a quaint pub that will delight fans of taxidermy,

and the best guitar outro of all time…
