UNSUNG NOTTINGHAM PUBS

October 2024. Nottingham.

The bus back from the Blues Dawg was comfortable, but also late. You pays ya money (£2) etc.

What annoys me is how long it takes folk to buy bus tickets these days, digging out their phone, forgetting the password, the Google Wallet failing. Other passengers must hate me.

Still, a missed connection meant 25 minutes to the next train and gave me an option.

With 3 ticks and a preemptive Spoons in the bag, surely a return visit to a Nottingham classic called.

But are there any ?  30 years ago a Notts County fan gave me a list of classics called the Bell, Royal Children, Salutation, Fellows Morton & Clayton and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem.

Only the Trip survives in the Guide, due entirely to the enduring Notts affection for Greene King. And the city centre (inside Maidstone Marion Way) is oddly devoid of GBG classics these days.

I thought I should do a canalside pub,

but the GBG app pointed me a few steps further to the Navigation.

Clearly done it before, scored it 3.5 years ago, but absolutely no recollection of it at all.

Slightly smart, very plain, like a Brunning & Price in miniature.

The Boltmaker wasn’t working, so the young lad summoned his boss to diagnose the problem.

Ah, end of barrel.

A rare Stancil mild, then, cool and chewy (3.5+), and more evidence that the GBG rewards good beer if not always in the most attractive pubs.

  1. Coincidentally, I’ve also been to the Navigation but have no memory of it. It was in 2015, according to my review on Pubs Galore, so obviously it’s changed a lot since then.

I’ve never seen a Stancill Mild either. I really must get out more.

    1. In my mind the Navigation was the Canal house, which I confuse with the Fellows Morton, if that’s the one with the actual canal boat in it.

I see the Crafty Crow has recently reopened. I always liked that.
