October 2024. Lincoln.
More random pics from last Tuesday’s (call it by its name) pub crawl round Lincoln.

Seven (7) pubs, not a GBG newbie among them so wasted effort if you’re a focused ticker. Which I no longer am, and can do pubs “recommended by Blackpool Jane” like the Royal William IV instead.

I guess this is the “new and exciting” place in town, the student-oriented foody pub by the marina with Brew York tap takeovers and a commitment to cask for folk who like commitment.

A bit like the Riverside in Sheffield, says Retired Martin, always desperate for a comparison.
Charming young staff who insisted on changing the barrel so Paul could have his Boltmaker (will there be a UK pubs without Keighley’s finest in 2030 ?).

My Neptune was cool and chewy (3+), but I’d challenge you to tell me how a fresher would pick between the three pumps that aren’t Tim Taylor.

And tellingly, in our 30 odd minutes there I didn’t see another pint (or half) pulled. Two blokes next to us were enjoying their Chicken and Pancetta salad with a jug of iced water. They’ll live to a hundred, being subjected to Mumford & Sons in foody pubs.
Our next pub had a better soundtrack,
a startling exterior,

and the beer of the day in Burton Bridge Damson Porter (NBSS 3.5+).

In sharp contrast to the Royal William, virtually everyone in a busy Cardinal’s Hat was drinking cask.

Just possibly, that’s why it was so good. Who knows ?
Perhaps my most confidentially recommended Lincoln pub, along with the Strugglers, but you’ll need to pop upstairs to believe this is really the city’s oldest pub,

and there are some who will declare it a bit self-conscious. BRAPA will know exactly what I mean.
That was the surprise pub of the city for me. I liked it a lot.

Not being on Dave’s itinerary I hadn’t expected to get in the Royal William IV and Cardinals Hat but they were both worth a visit.
Having a new cask put on for me, well not only me, in two consecutive pubs might never have happened before in the past fifty-three years !

Well the Neptune has a fairly Proper pump clip, but it features that universal get-out-of-jail-for-bad-keeping word “hazy”.

But does “hazy” mean “lazy brewer” ?
