September 2024. Mexborough.
While Simon ticked Mexborough’s Spoons, I set out to bring you the cultural highlights.
It’s instructive to look at What Pub and untick the “real ale” and “open pubs only” tabs.

Oooh, loads of pubs.
Now, untick them;

A Spoons, a brewery tap, the Imperial club and a lone “Proper Pub” in Old Mill’s Falcon.
What else is there to tempt you away from the honeypots of Swinton ?
Well, a high class butcher next to the Spoons.

a few modern cafe bars in the east of town,

of which Borders “We have Hazy Jane !” has the best door.

If someone (Brunning and Price) has a spare million to spend on the old billiard rooms opposite the Spoons there’s a marvellous shell of a building,

but sadly the evidence of major investment in crumbling structures is patchy.

Obviously the Concertina Band Club is the most tragic loss, but the Bull’s Head once had John Smiths Smooth,

and looked like this;

The Boy and Barrel has live music and a review on Pubs Galore from a legendary #PubMan.
“There was a fairly big area up a few steps to the left,this area had a pool table in it with some tables and chairs. There were no real ales on the bar,the keg options were Stones bitter which i had,this was decent enough,the other beer was John Smiths smooth crap. There were no Samuels Smiths beers on the bar and the barmaid was alive on my visit.“

Tommy’s Bar continues to lose letters at an alarming rate,

and the only photo I can find on t’interweb is rather alarming.

As is the £1 surcharge for milky coffee at the cafe opposite.

In honesty, I thought it looked marvellous. You should see Rotherham Parkgate.
I’m intrigued by the old photograph. The distinctive “U” in “BULL’S” and “BURTON” reappeared a century later in the Allied Breweries logo and on their Ind Coope beers.

The people of this country voted for it.
It’s democracy.

The only thing I know about Mexborough is that the darts player Dennis Priestley was once a coal merchant there.

Now that doesn’t surprise me.
