KENNEDY

September 2024. Sheffield.

So, why am I heading back to the Grapes, Sheffield’s premier authentic Irish pub ?

That would be an ecumenical matter. Perhaps it’s to admire the tiling in the right hand bar.

Perhaps to admire the Somersby tap (proper Irish that).

Nope. It’s because the rumour is true, this Guinness stronghold is selling craft beer.

OK, none of the lads perched on stools along the wall facing the bar are touching the cask, but as you’ll see a perfect looking pint of Barnsley (NBSS 3.5).

More to the point, what an astonishing back room in honour of JFK.

I really must track down those 1960 presidential debates with Nixon and compare them with the class of 2024.

But that’s unfair, we live in different times to the 1960s, cask has improved and the view from the garden of the Grapes show how Sheffield has changed.

Talking of hot debates, I look forward to Will coming along to tell me these lacings DON’T indicate a top pint.

  1. I went in that room once, on a Saturday night about twenty five years ago after a meeting of the left group I was a member of back then in Sheffield. It really is quite a surreal experience drinking in what is effectively a shrine to the slain JFK.

    1. Mathew,
I had a pint in that room several years ago and know what I mean, especially with remembering that November 1963 day ending the optimism that the young President had brought.
