September 2024. Sheffield.
A rare Friday evening in Sheffield, rather than Waterbeach. Still no new GBG, so what to do ?
“We should go to the pub” says Mrs RM, reminding me why I married her all those years ago.
Normally that means pizza and Blonde at the Blind Monkey as it’s closer, but I somehow persuaded her we should go back to the Blake, scene of #CasualSexismGate the night before.
If nothing else, there are few better views in the world on a clear night.

And that golden lights draw you in.

And moreover, they draw a huge cross section of north Sheffield life to the Blake on a Friday evening.
“YOU order the beers” I tell her,

and a minute later she’s back with two wonderful pints of Whim’s astonishingly hoppy Big 3.
“I wasn’t asked if I was sure I wanted a pint!” says Mrs RM triumphantly, and she’s finished hers before I’m halfway down mine. #PintWomen.

I haven’t the heart to tell her well all be drinking schooners if the health police get their way.
“We should go to the pub” is similar to what Mrs SP said to me yesterday lunchtime so we went to Codsall Station which is as good as ever. I had faggots and two pints of Holdens Special. She had an omelette and a bottle of pop.

It’s the omelette and bottle of pops that helps pubs survive, Paul.
Saying that, I rarely see omelette on pub menus !

Agreed Martin. A shame, because I am rather fond of omelettes.

As you’ll have discovered on recent cruises, the omelette station is one of the joys of breakfast at sea !

Yes indeed Martin, and omeletting you know that it’s £9.95 with chips and peas at Codsall Station. Faggots are 55p more. Holdens Special at 5.1% is £4.

You’re making me jealous now, Paul, especially as Mrs PBT’s and I had to make do with a cuppa plus a hot dog, on Bexhill seafront, this afternoon.
The sun was shining though, and it was very pleasant sitting there, looking out to sea. Of more importance, I now know the precise location of the time-warp, New Inn, at the back of the town, which means a future visit is on the cards.

Paul, was the time warp that you were before August 1988 again and the pubs were shut during the afternoon ? I love looking out to sea though and did so for quite a while at Sheringham and Cromer earlier this month.

I’m still discovering Bexhill, Paul, and never heard of the New Inn (quite a way north, isn’t it). An interesting town.

Yes Bill, it’s one of my favourite pubs.
The equivalent building at Albrighton, the next station along the line, opened in July 2016 as the Station Ale House but it didn’t last three years and, from my one visit, I’m not really surprised.
I was also rather underwhelmed with the Cheshire Line railway pub at Cheadle, Cheshire, I got to last February.

Albrighton has (or had) the Harp, a perennial GBG entry until a decade ago. I think the trade all goes to the cafe at the David Austin garden centre these days.
