August 2024. Milstead. Sittingbourne.
I love Kent, even the scuzzy north coast, there’s just so much variety of scenery and pubs.

And Tuesday morning’s new GBG tick, the Milstead Red Lion, is that delightful rural pub in the middle of nowhere.

metres from the M20, cherries for sale from an honesty box,

10am opening for the ladies of the village coming for tea and toast, early morning crisps cabinet.

We stop for a half of Goachers Dark and a lime and soda, with me confusing the young barmaid who appears as I’m exploring (“My husband is in charge of ordering the real ale !” cries Mrs RM).

and admire the North Kent accents in an unfussy pub I guess is community-owned but who cares ?

How has it never made the GBG ? The Dark is good (3.5), even at 10am,

the photos recall the famed Kentish GBG tickers visit of 2021,

and it almost feels like a classic.

There’s “Sound and Vision” by Bowie,
though the sound is a bit quiet, and the vision is of the Olympic basketball.
It feels like it might be a rural classic, but needs an evening visit to be sure. Luckily, Simon has done that for me.

Let me tell you, I’m a bit jealous of that boy’s photos.
Your photos are great! Had to brighten that one up to highest brightness just to vaguely see me. What a lovely pub. Sadly not where Rod Hull fell of his roof as I was originally told, but the beer weirdly high quality for Nth Kent and just lovely evening hubbub. Giant bowl free crisps too.

I love the idea that people tell you things that just aren’t true, Simon. Not that I’d ever do that kind of thing. I thought Rod’s roof (great micro name) was in Winchelsea/Rye down on south Sussex. If only people reading these blogs cared enough to correct us…
I find the Painters Forstals and Doddingtons and Oad Streets merge into one another round this way. Your BRAPA taxis are heroes, but not in an M People way oh no.

The trouble is nowadays, with so much ‘fake news’ circulating, that it’s difficult to know what is and what isn’t true.
I’ve just heard that someone in the news last week named himself after a football hooligan, as if any right minded person would ever do that !
