TELEPHONE KIOSK, STAMFORD

July 2024. Stamford.

I didn’t have space for the tourist shots in that Stamford post, yesterday,

which I realised would be a disappointment to fans of lil’ ol’ England‘s costume drama sites.

Anyone who has seen such seminal TV series as “Eastenders“, “It Ain’t Half Hot Mum” and “Bagpuss” will be familiar with the gorgeous Georgian layout of one of our great towns,

tiny alleys at every turn,

and essential shops packed with inessential items for Yummy Mummies from Uffington and Market Deeping to spend their allowances on.

Actually, Stamford was heaving with folk of all ages last Wednesday, and I made a note I immediately lost to return and revisit the town’s other pubs and score the churches. It’s always reassuring to know where the phone box-turned-defibrillator sits (just north of The George),

and we can only hope that any folk needing that vital equipment are not distracted by the urge to read the inscriptions first.

Yes, I agree, Henry, one of the most beautiful towns in the country,

though I’m sure even TWG Hoskins would agree a few more pubs and a few less book shops would be nice.

    1. Golden rule of pubbing, churches are where you kill time waiting for the village pub to open, book shops are where you kill time waiting for the gorgeous market town pub to open.

Not that there’s too much funny about the word “permitted”, if you ask me.
