A POTTER AROUND ALNWICK

I’d left Mrs RM at the eastern entrance to Alnwick gardens, with clear instructions to leave by the town exit so she could visit the Tenantry Column,

and Barter Books.

A rare example of a station waiting room not being converted into a micropub, I guess,

but give it time. Perhaps the most famous book shop outside Hay-on-Wye,

but no sign of that 1975 Beer Guide, though the section on obscure singer-songwriters may compenate for some.

You can see all of Alnwick in 20 minutes, ignoring the gardens and castle,

and it’s looking a bit more spick and span than on my first post-Covid visit.

Frankly, unless you’re a 12 year old Potter fan you can skip the castle interior and just admire the exterior,

the best view of all coming from the Lion bridge.

But on no account miss the gardens, waterfall and the tree house, one of the UK’s top attractions. Just don’t eat the poison plants.

  3. Yes, I briefly wandered round that massive second hand book shop.
    I would have preferred it still as a railway station, and so not needing a bus from and to Alnmouth.
