July 2024. Rossett. Wrexham.
From trips to Wales past to trips to Wales present, and finally some new Welsh GBG24 ticks. I’d forgot how close that border was, though the route below has a detour through League of Gentleman Hadfield at the moment. A motorway from Sheffield to Stockport through the Snake Pass is surely a priority for the new Government.

What joy to be back in the land of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who have brought Hollywood to Wrexham and whose £200k a week footballer salaries have sent house prices soaring in that strip of black and white suburbia between the Chester and Wrexham industrial estates.

You only know you’ve arrived in Wales entering Rossett because of those 20 mph signs. Why isn’t Golden Lion written in Welsh ?

Round here an all-day dining pubs with planters and Wig Wams and range rovers in the car park normally only means one thing,

But it doesn’t have a random tractor outside, so it can’t be a Brunning and Price, surely ?

I’m not sure till I reach the bar, and see a range of Hyde’s beers seemingly determined to convince you it’s not Hyde’s at all.

In fairness, and I’m always almost fair, no-one stops me to ask if I’m dining, and the young man actually laughs when I ask if he’d prefer cash or card.
I peer over the drip trays and see no liquid in any of them, have a half (£2.35) of the Light out of curiosity, and it’s a wishy washy 2.5.

Do Hyde’s brew beers especially for a posh Welsh market like the other Greater Mancunian brewers did ?

Perhaps that’s what these diners were discussing.

It’s OK. No, it really is, despite the lack of anything Welsh on the menu (unless “treacle baked ham and eggs” is a local speciality). Decent soundtrack too.
Actually, if you’ve come this far on the No.1 Sapphire line you might as well walk the 20 minutes to Trevalyn,

where the Griffin greets you with this classic porch,

and a classic pub cat.

Or at least, it did, in 2019. How long do pub cats live in North Wales ?
Pub cats in North Wales live forever. In much the same way that it’s always sunny in Wrexham. Come on the Town!

Yet again, what are people thinking putting four pale, session strength cask beers on in a posh dining pub where most people will be ordering wine or spirits?
As it happens, I voted Hydes Light Ale my best beer on Stockport and South Manchester CAMRA’s Mild Magic trail this year, although the half I had was at a wet-led community pub in, of all places, Cheadle.

No-one ordered any cask while I was there, anyway !
Cheadle has some good wet-led pubs these days.
