JOHN SMITHS AT THE SAN SIRO

June 2024. Milan.

Our lone night in Milan before trundling east to San Marino had us staring across at one of the world’s great football stadium.

The first time we’d seen the San Siro in daylight, too,

our previous visit coming in Christmas 1996 when Mrs RM and I turned up from Bologna at 8pm on the off-chance we could get tickets to Inter Milan (star player – Paul Ince) v Juventus (star players – Deschamps, Del Piero, Zidane) in the Italian Cup.

10 minutes later were beginning a half hour ascent to the top tier of this iconic stand.

Mrs RM’s photo from that night in ’96 suggests it wasn’t a sell-out of the 80,000 capacity San Siro !

Straight after the final whistle we headed to a sleeper train to Rome, Mrs RM missing the chance to admire the Inter/AC graffiti. Until now.

Hard to believe the San Siro has lasted nearly a century, with plans from its two tenants to relocate to something modern being as successful Luton’s efforts to leave the similarly charming Kenilworth Road.

I love the artwork;

Mrs RM was more taken with Baretto 1957,

the scary looking bar at the stadium entrance. Look what I could have had.

Instead, gooey chocolate croissant and espresso for a couple of quid. Gorgeous.

I wish I hadn’t looked at Untappd just now and seen what I really could have had.

John Smiths in Milan ! What witchcraft is this ?

    1. I don’t remember eating during that 1996 match and there was nothing on last week. I suspect it’s quite limited. It’s the quality of the pasta that stands out. Pizza was as cheap as a fiver everywhere.

  1. Wow they still brewing it. We had lots of Courage Reading ex workers work at ROF Burghfield just down the road who had access to the staff shop on a Saturday and my friend Norman the fitters mate bought me a crate which was bound for …Italy. Just to rub it in it was lovely.
