MORE PLAIN, EXCELLENT, WARWICK PUBS

May 2024. Warwick.

It’s always good to walk the bounds, and I reckon I got more of a sense of Warwick last Tuesday than in half a dozen previous visits.

It’s no Bewdley, or Buxton; more a Bromsgrove with a castle, perhaps,

but approaching the Wild Boar I felt unusual excitement at a revisit of a Just William locals pub next to the station.

Let’s celebrate the ordinary. Lads from 10 to 59, a nice drinking atmosphere, a Facebook promising cheese & wine and comedy nights.

But, as Dave noted about the Fourpenny Shop, a bit “clean”.

So, judge it on its merits. Cheery, mixed crowd, outlet for local Slaughterhouse beers, quick cask turnover.

I meant to go Locale, but I couldn’t resist that Hung Drawn and Portered from, ooh, miles away. Well, 18.7 miles down the Fosse Way, to be precise.

If you can be bothered to read CAMRA’s Discourse forum you’ll find folk bemoaning the quality of cask and wanting changed to the GBG to somehow rectify it.

Well, this wonderful porter was another rich and chewy* NBSS 3,5+, albeit in a plain station pub, more evidence for my assertion that the Good Beer Guide will direct you to the very best cask can offer.

For some, that’s clearly not enough.

*I know what I mean.

  1. Unknown beers like when I was there six years ago.

I remember the Three Fishes for “clean” air before the smoking ban but a cantankerous licensee. Far better across the road in the Loggerheads.

    1. Agree about the cantankerous landlord. While I was still on the fags I barred myself from the There Fishes and made the Loggerheads my Shrewsbury pub of choice. Far better.

    1. Completely agree with that assessment. It was my last pub of the day yesterday, and luckily I had time for two halves rather than just the one I’d sensibly limited myself to at the previous eight pubs. Both were NBSS 4, and none of that chewiness that Retired Martin gets with his beers.
