May 2024. Waterbeach.
The night before another venture east to tick Europe, we stay in Waterbeach to give Dad a special viewing of the major construction project across the road,

order the Chinese from Chung Hwa (new dish alert : No. 61 Chicken with Spring Onion and Ginger), and wait for it over a pint in the Sun.

Landlady Helen had just enjoyed/survived the first Sun May Bank Holiday Beer Festival since the loss of Andrew, with a bit of help from local legends Milton Brewery.
10 beers, all reputable breweries from near and far, shame we missed it.

Just the strong one from Mighty Oak left; I urged Mrs RM to have that while I went sensible with Lister’s, which I’d never heard of before the Sun stocked their mild.

I shouldn’t have gone sensible. The Lister’s was a 3.5, the Sussex Strong a cool, rich, 4.5.

Well done, Helen.
That’s a nice event for a local boozer. Looks like it was well supported too. Well done, Helen.

Yes, I sense villages like to support local beer fests, particularly over Bank Holidays, Robin. And they can try all 10 beers over 2 or 3 visits.

There’s been a Sun May bank Holiday Beer Festival in Stafford, but I had no inclination to go.

But they might have had Titanic Plum Porter on, Paul.

Yes, just like Liverpool pubs I’ve used these past two days.
Bass not drinking very well in the White Star was my biggest disappointment.
But fewer pubs there using sparklers than I remember meant better beer quality overall.

Yes, I thought the Bass in the White Star wasn’t the strong point this year, “a bit thin” I wrote;
but I agree in general that Liverpool beer seemed better than recently (in the Lion, for one).

I had a lovely pint of Liverpool Moorfields Mild in the Lion Tavern on Thursday, drinking as well as our Cloudwater Mild in the Britons Protection three months ago.

Was it busy, Paul ?
I remember a couple of visits (one with yourself) pre-Covid when it was too quiet but was bustling on last visit.

No, only about half a dozen customers early Thursday evening in the Lion Tavern, then the White Star a bit busier and not many with me the last customer of the day at about 9pm in the Carnarvon Castle. I didn’t bother with the Baltic Fleet yards from my accommodation now that it’s unknown beers and, as I had been warned in Peter Kavanaghs, card only.
