A MAD DASH FROM LANDYWOOD

March 2024. Landywood. Cannock.

Well, Great Wyrley in the GBG, actually.

I wasn’t going to stop and tick the Swan on the way back from triumph in Cannock, but the challenge of doing the 34 minute return walk, beer and loo trip and catching the half hourly train to New St was too tempting.

No time for any but the most glamorous photo shoot on the way,

but I stopped in the middle of an empty road to capture the glory of a classic 1930s Staffordshire roadhouse.

Proper bench seating,

those machines that sell soft sweets that colour your tongue blue,

a lone handpump dispensing (appropriately) a Hobson’s choice (NBSS 3+).

A friendly welcome from the landlord, though a younger lad looked suspiciously at my phone and chided me for having it in camera mode,

“It’ll drain your battery”

and then chided me again for not closing the door to the Gents.

I left before I could be chided thrice, and made it back to Landywood station with 10 seconds to spare

  1. To hearken back, if CAMRA wanted to slim down the West Yorkshire part of the GBG then they could just make Return Trays a no-no
