“CHALLENGE 25” FOR MY CAN OF SHANDY

March 2024. Whitby.

The sun finally broke through the clouds over Whitby harbour just as a cry of “yeeeesss” rent the sky. I feared a Rashford goal in the derby I was ignoring, but that had come 2 hours early and this was a cheer for Haaland’s clincher.

Suddenly I was warming to Whitby, and the views over to the Abbey from the arch were worth Mrs RM’s hike.

Love those contours, and the golden stone at the top of the 199 steps comes alive towards dusk.

We only just made it to to the top, fortified by crisp white haddock, scampi and chips from Angel Fisheries Harbourside, the best Whitby chippy I’ve been in so far (never been in the Magpie, mind).

Lovely service, and the lady  asked me for ID when I bought a can of Ben Shaw’s shandy (NSSS 3.5), the first time I’d been asked for ID since, well, ever. Humour lives, even in the tourist traps.

OK, sun setting, time for a pre-emptive tick ?

  1. Dave and I ate at Silver Street Fisheries and thought it was very good. I am struggling to remember the one Joan, Barb, Dave and I ate at on Pier Road(Whitby Catch?). Dave may remember where and which one we thought was better.

  2. If only people knew that all you have to do is just put the money on the counter and walk out with the drink.
