A LOAD OF DOBBLERS

Just for Kentish Paul, your Pelican of the Day;

February 2024. Cambridge.

Pub 2 of “Just a couple with Will in Cambridge” and a real wander into the backstreets towards Newmarket Road,

well away from the post-graduate Mill Road set to a real (and increasingly rare) survivor. The backstreet boozer, the community pub with big screen and pool and crib but none of that guest beer nonsense.

I hadn’t been in the Dobblers for 20 years, when its beer line up was a consistent Eagle and Bombardier, and was just hoping there was enough residual charm to justify adding Will adding this to his crowded list.

As it turned out, just about. Look ! A Luton Town badge Will !

And some proper Old Skool seating Will !

And a pint of Adnam’s Southwold (in dreadful glass) Will !

No Bombardier though, just those Wells Brewpoint beers and a guest, which Will clearly wasn’t enjoying much as he returned from the bar.

I smiled at Will. My Southwold was a 3+, cool and foamy, far better than I’d expected. Will had to take a sip to reluctantly confirm my diagnosis.

What a lovely pub.

Four lads turned up to play pool, I briefly considered staying for a second pint and reading “Skips of Europe”,

but that turned out to be the much less interesting “Skies of Europe”.

The chap drinking at the bar came over to stick a quid in the jukebox,

and on came “You’re wondering now” by The Specials.

“Good choice mate”. The bloke at the jukebox laughed. For a second, I felt like a Cambridge man again.

      1. But that brewer with 149 years experience is trusted with brews from across the country so it’s probably more likely down to slow turnover in some pubs.

      1. Andy,
I drank Bass Charrington’s Crown Bitter in the Little Rose during February 1973, and Whitbread Trophy in the Rose.
I don’t think I’ve been to either pub since then.
