TOP 100 PUBS – THE RED LION, LIVERPOOL

February 2024. Liverpool.

Mrs RM failed to strike a pose in front of the Abbey Road mural (“I didn’t see it“),

and sauntered off to tick the cathedrals, I said I’d catch her up after my tick. She’s used to it by now.

Only one central new Guide entry in Pool, but that’s par for the course. There’s often only a couple at best (worst ?) in Manchester; it’s Newcastle that’s all change.

But where has the Red Lion, 2 minutes from Central, been ? It’s been a house, apparently.

In truth, I’m hooked by the time I reach the door.

What does it remind me of ?

Ah, it’s a bit Pineapple/Southampton Arms, isn’t it ?

Whatever, it’s a stunner. Beautiful work throughout.

I don’t want tat in my house, but I quite like it in a pub. Mrs RM said that.

White Rat seems the beer of choice, but Neptune sounds more local,

and it’s a cool foamy half (wimp), an easy NBSS 3.5. I take it for a walk up the stairs,

and back down.

A group of Scottish tourists say “Hello” and I realise I must look manic walking round and taking photos, and plonk down next to them, but as it’s only a half (wimp) I’ve drunk up before I says “Hello” back.

You get the idea, anyway. Hope it gets the trade.

BRAPA and Colin came here last month and (I think) liked it; so had Merseyside Pubs Phil. But I’ll await Paul Mudge’s definitive take when he gets here.

I think the pink sunglasses will seal the deal for Paul.

  1. “Converted into a traditional pub from a terraced house in 2022”
I think that’s how we got the Circus Tavern 180 years ago.
I might need two nights in Liverpool

    1. I have two nights in Liverpool planned for early March. Mostly doing photos for Pubs Galore and WhatPub, but I’ll probably pop in for the occasional beer along the way. That Red Lion looks good.

      1. SH,
        Tabley Street I presume.
Did you ever stay in the short lived Matthew Street one, with breakfast overlooking the White Star ?

  2. That’s fine looking pub, but what happened to the floor covering?

Looks like creased, and badly worn lino in one photo, although the majority seems to be nicely renovated floorboards.

      1. I remember the Duke of York in Bloomsbury as having rare original 1930s linoleum.
I try to avoid looking down when in Tim’s venues.

  3. Very wise, Paul, although given the multi coloured carpets, for which Spoons are famous for, it’s sometimes hard to tell, what is pattern and what is something else.
