MOMOS @ FREAK STREET, WALKLEY

January 2024. Walkley. Sheffield.

You may be wondering why there’s been no mention of “Poor Things” on this blog.

You’ll recall that Emma Stone was hotly tipped to play the role of Mrs RM in the biopic of my life, but having watched her traumatising performance in Poor Things in the Light cinema last week I will now be canvassing for someone more modest for that role. Possibly Baroness Nicky Morgan.

Mrs RM had joined me in a week of sobriety and reflection after the excesses of Preston, but by Saturday was raring to go again.

Well, the 9 minutes up the hill to Walkley’s main drag, anyway.

Freak Street Cafe opened just before Christmas offering Himalayan food and craft beer,

with restricted opening hours and unexpected early closing. Sounds like a micropub to me.

Come early for momos” is their strapline. We did.

Room for 16 at most, a relaxed attitude to payment,

and a choice of Deya or Flensburger. OK, it’s not getting in the GBG but that’s a better beer choice than in half of Lincolnshire already.

Take a picture of the cakes !” urged Mrs RM, who’d forgotten her phone.

The lovely Irish lady had to inform Mrs RM she couldn’t squeeze a pint of Deya out of the barrel, so she settled for a half.

In a pint glass ?”

Of course, beer tastes better in a pint” . That’s my girl !

I agree with you” said the nice lady.

I was driving later, and my can of Nanny State stared pitifully at Mrs RM’s creamy Deya.

The food was sensational. The Tibetan momos (filled dumplings) were a staple of our grub-filled days at the End of the Road till recently,

and that lamb shoulder with fluffy flatbread was the best curry in Hillsborough so far.

Perhaps….perhaps I can get them to stick a pin of Bass on over the weekend ?

  1. Hey Martin, have you sorted out your gammy leg yet? Martha saw you last week and reckons you’re walking like a drunken penguin.
