January 2024. Preston.
Sorry for a two part post about one pub, my first such extravagance since a similarly photogenic wonder in Plymouth.

Mrs RM had spotted the bargain pies, and if anything is guaranteed to fuel appetite for pork in pastry in Old Tom and Plum Porter.

A marvellous combination, in a pub with great beer and a top view from the table by the door.

Bowie, The Smiths, and Slade your soundtrack on a Saturday night.
Mrs RM was won over.
“Can I have another one ?“
“Plum Porter ?“
“And another pie please“

Yes, we shared them, but still. Good job they don’t put the calories on the front of the packet.

Frankly, all we needed was a local resident with a penchant for Paisley and cassettes saying “STOP. NOW” and we’d have been fine.
But he wasn’t. And eventually we had to leave the Old Boys in the best room, and head into the night.

Such a beautiful pub. I miss it.

That pie looks amazing, and at £1.50, an absolute bargain.
Had to slip past that YouTube clip of Morrissey, though! “Charming Man”? I don’t think so!!

I’ve been paying less than £2 for the pasties in Stafford’s Kings Arms recently, and from a proper pie heaters on the bar counter.
They’ve had a Robinsons “tap takeover” this month but no Old Tom because “it’s too expensive”.

As I always say, as someone who lives in Preston you can get blase about the Black Horse. I mean, yesterday I went in there for the first time in 3 months. It’s always there for me, right? I should go more often, really.

Very good point. I always try and visit in Preston, and am always amazed how busy is it but how you always get a table.
