New Year’s Eve 2023. Sheffield.
One last post from the old year before we head into (checks notes) 2024, and a brand new Bass outlet for Cambridge. I didn’t really want to join Will in the Bath (as it were), but it gave me a chance to order the last Sang Lung of the year over a pint.

I can see why Will likes the Bath so much,

cosy rooms, high quality Barnsley Bitter, guests like Swannay, and a very strong one that folk go “Oooh, that’s strong” to.

I like the comfy bench seating, the mixed crowd, the unisex loos,

and on this night I really enjoyed the cool and fruity Deception, the best Abbeydale beer (3.5+) I’ve had all year after only wondering about their merits the other day.
And that was that for 2023.
Not even “beers from £2.75” (not Bass) in the venerable Queen’s Ground, next door to Sang Lung (sweet and sour chicken substituted for squid, sadly), could tempt me further.

Or the dregs from the can of Bud on the pavement.

I’m no fan of fireworks, but Sheffield’s New Year display across the seven hills is quite something,

and I reckon the best view comes from our upstairs bedroom.

Next year I may sell seats on the window ledge to visiting beer tickers.
They have Abbeydale Deception at the Broomhill Tavern but I usually go for the Tetley’s. I can’t remember if you’ve been? It’s my go-to pub for watching Luton Town when they’re on the box, as they are tonight. If we win I might just have a Deception in celebration.

I think I’ve been to the Broomhill, Will, before the Craft Union conversion. Have a Black Mass if they win.

The several Craft Union pubs I’ve used have all been in town centres – until today.
The Luck Penny is an estate pub two miles north of Stafford town centre and built in 1967 for Bents Brewery, from Bass to Courage with the pub swaps and only recently refurbished quite smartly to Craft Union though still very much the estate pub it’s always been. £3.65 for Landlord is £1 more than I’d expect in a usual town centre Craft Union pub.

I’ve been in the Luck Penny c.15 years back, had a year or two in the GBG. Don’t recall it being bargain then.

No, it was just a normal Enterprise Inns estate pub fifteen years ago.
It had many consecutive years in the GBG under Richard Owen between 1982 to 2011.
For many years at work I knew Eric Boyden who I’ve only recently learnt was its first licensee from 1967 to 1973.
