A BIRTHDAY IN A CASTLE. IN A CAVE.

December 2023. South Cave.

Happy Christmas. I’m sure there’s nothing you need more on 25 December than pics from Retired Martin Day, and I’m delighted to bring you the evidence of my posh hotel in South Cave on what we traditionalists insist on calling Humberside.

Actually, it wasn’t that posh,

and cost less than the scruffy Travelodge an hour’s walk west.

You sometimes find bargain rates for these remote country house places once the wedding and Christmas trade has dried up for the year,

and Mrs RM was delighted with the Instagrammable opportunities of Cave Castle, even if it is less cave and more castle.

I think the expectation is that the cheaper room rates attract folk who then spend the savings on drinks and £30 main courses,

but the bar offered only keg Thwaites, and you can guess where our culinary attentions were focused on Retired Martin Day;

So, after admiring the sunset from room 42,

we set off on foot to South Cave,

where a 3rd pub tick and some Gochujiang sauce awaited.

Thrillingly, I had no idea what Gochujiang sauce was.
