December 2023. Hull.

Suddenly, Americans love our unsung UK towns.

The Southworths rave about Leek, Reynolds and McElhenney have taken Wrexham into the Premier League, and now the actual Willy Wonka is telling us how “sexy” the Hull accent is.

And of course Timothee is right, and it can surely only be a matter of time before a benevolent American owner takes over the Hull Tigers and takes them into the promised land of 5 minute VAR delays.

On Thursday afternoon I cracked and spent Mrs RM’s entire Christmas present fund (£28.30) on a Northern train in search of a lone East Yorkshire tick.

Goole looked rather pleasing. Perhaps Rihanna will do a tour of the Goole takeaways and declare them “wicked”.

I’d contemplated a stop in Brough, but walking 5 miles to South Cave’s pub and back along unlit lanes suddenly less appealing than a proper day out in Hull, with all that art and light and colour.

A bit quiet at 4pm,

perhaps everyone is in the pubs.

The town council kindly produce a colour coded map for you to navigate the city.

I assume that colours represent different average NBSS scores ?

I take a quick look at the GBG App and decide to head to the Old Town first.

Queen Victoria square is a national treasure,

even if the shopping street heading out east to the Old Town really isn’t.

And the sooner they crack on and get this Brunning and Price finished the better.
