MOOR BEER, AND TOP TOILET GRAFFITI, ON THE BERMONDSEY BEER MILE

November 2023. Bermondsey.

I’d given myself an hour to re-explore Bermondsey on the trip home from Tonbridge to Waterbeach, though apparently these days there’s no restrictions on when you use your off-peak ticket to leave the capital, only getting there. Can this be true ?

I confidently told you that the Anspach & Hobday Tap was the first Guide entry under the Bermondsey arches, but frankly I can’t be bothered to check. I do read that the lustre seems to have slipped a bit from the Mile of late, but I’m a big fan of industrial exploration, particularly in a quieter hour.

A bit TOO quiet at 4pm on Friday, and while What Pub makes this look like the best pubbed square mile in the Kingdom,

most of them weren’t open yet, including a new Dutch beer bar that I would have loved but regretted in the morning.

Never mind, the Moor bar was open earlier than expected, and this one had impressed the Southworths back in 2018.

Last time here I’m sure the toilets on the Mile were all portacabins on the pavement; now they were inside like in micropubs and very nice too;

You’re NOT locked in !” it said, reassuringly.

Do Moor really make beer that strong you’d turn the handle the wrong way ? Oh yes, the Freddie Walker.

I know if you follow more than about 192 Twitter accounts you’ll believe the world has gone to hell and everyone is ghastly, but again I can’t praise the young staff in Moor highly enough*.

“The Revival is on cask. Is that alright ?” the nice lady asked, worried I might be allergic to real ale.

It was cool and chewy, and if not quite as life-afforming as my first pint it was still a winner (3.5).

Notably, while the Arch House was toasty warm, the Moor was a little less so, except in the welcome, but I’d definitely do both again. And probably too many more.

Anyway, where’s London Bridge gone ? Best head for that tall thing…

*I haven’t had anything other than a friendly welcome in a London pub since Covid. What can it mean ?
