SURREPTITIOUS PUB PHOTOGRAPHY – MORE TIPS FOR THE ASPIRING BLOGGER

Of course there’ll always be a market for blogs that only give you photos of pub exterior,

but the real money glory comes from those interior shots with real people in.

Pubs only exist because people visit them, much as some folk would like to keep unviable places open due to misguided nostalgia.

Taking photos in pubs is an art, and Patronised readers of this blog will be aware of the intensive residential course I offer in surreptitious pub photography.

In Scarborough I noted how you could get your mobile phone out to Shazam a tune while snapping the pumps, and in Norwich last week I found that a map on the ceiling is a legitimate object to photograph, particularly if you intend walking to Heigham next and need directions.

In the Garden House I entered the room occupied by the Staropramen drinker (top) and headed straight for the bar.

Y’allright ?” he says, part greeting, part inquisition.

When challenged, the blogger has several potential tactics;

DENIAL – Say “fine” and act innocent.

FLIGHT – Just keep walking.

APOLOGY – “Sorry I’m just a weird pub photographer don’t mind me”

DIVERSION – Ask an unrelated question, in this case;

“What are those big glasses mate ?”.

People LOVE being asked questions that allow them to demonstrate their superior knowledge, in this case a potted history of the two pint glass beloved of “the youngsters”.

Then thank him for his insight, and head for the door.

  1. “part greeting, part inquisition”. I find inquisition’s more likely in Norfolk and Uttoxeter.

    There’s probably a demand for those quart glasses. In two pubs this past week I’ve noticed a younger drinker buy two pints of Carling at a time, like older drinkers buy two bottles of Newcastle Brown at a time in Tim’s venues.

  2. I’m reminded of Mickey Two Pints who used to drink in my local in Bristol. His invariable habit was to come in and order two pints of Bass at the same time. He’d drink one then order another. Once he’d had the three, he’d go home.
