October 2023. Leeds.
Beer, music, curry. Two out of three ain’t bad.

Two gigs in two nights, actually, as we stopped off on the way back from Newcastle at the Brudenell.
Pub Curmudgeon did the pubs this week, Mrs RM and I did the music and curry. And street art in Leeds most colourful neighbourhood.

But our curry at My Lahore is definitely from the “smart Pakistan family diner next to business hotels mould“, rather than the Formica tables and curry for a fiver £7 of Bradford or Ancoats.
Waiting area modelled on a British train carriage,

one for the train tickers.

Asian families in their own booths feasted on burgers and pastas while we confidently went for the Lamb Handi on the bone with rotis and onion pakora. Pretending we know what we’re doing.

Probably one of us should have had a biryani, but those flavours were stunning, almost as good as that place in Bradford we went with the Southworths, who’d have been in curry heaven.

Really lovely staff, great coffee and a full tummy guarantee.
But we were going to need a seat at the Brudenell for Laura J Martin‘s comeback show.

Well, we hadn’t seen her since Latitude. You remember Latitude ? We still have nightmares.
Actually, Laura was supporting The Clientele, who seemed to be older than us and had attracted the sort of devotees you’d get at an XTC conventions. One lady had flown from the States to get her album signed.

We didn’t ask the astonishingly talented Laura to sign a vinyl, but we did “whoop” a bit at her new songs (press PLAY for a little extract).
You really don’t want to hear me whoop. But you might do if you go to the Castle on the 22nd (especially if the Old Tom is on).

Is that Tim’s sister?

“especially if the Old Tom is on”
Not till November I’m reliably informed.

This is 22nd November so a good chance, if I can make it.

I’m really quite jealous you got to see Laura live again. I can’t make the 22nd or I’d have considered a road trip. Hoping she’ll play sometime a little more southerly next year.

All the best folk are Laura fans ! I’m sure she’ll do something more southerly when the record comes out.
No-one we spoke to who was there for The Clientele had heard of her, which shows how much great music goes unheard !
