September 2023. Brigg.
What Pub told us there were four cask pubs in Brigg. We found those, and an unmarked craft bar, AND a genuine real ale bar.

The Doghouse, at the Exchange, seemingly Brigg’s premier coaching house, had also escaped the attention of What Pub. Till now.

It’s a smart old place, with big red Chesterfields,

and that odd predilection for canines in costume (and Abba).

The barmaid was another chatty, cheery, gem.
And if you’re going to have one beer on then Landlord is a decent choice, just as Black Sheep had been in the Black Bull an hour earlier.

It was the beer of the day, cool and textured (3.5). The GBG is well and fine but visiting ALL the pubs in a small town and finding merit in each is an underrated joy. We’re doing Wem next week.
It was 13:15. Blimey, had we really polished off half a dozen pubs in under two hours ? It seemed so.

20 minutes to finish the beer, let Will write his notes, and dash to the platform.

Or we really would be in the dog house.
Today’s the day the WhatPub co-ordinator for the East Midlands returns from his holiday. He’s promised to add those pubs in Brigg after the local branch failed to do so in three months after I notified them. Am I holding my breath?
I am not.
Luckily there’s a review of the pub on Pubs Galore https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33381/, or you can also re-read Martin’s blog.

Mainly with getting about on my bus pass, I have submitted quite a few updates for WhatPub recently but hardly any of them have been actioned. That is a shame given what a useful resource WhatPub is.

It does seem variable. West Yorkshire – Halifax – are mustard at least.
They also identify “return trays”.

Six pubs before 2pm – a remarkably good effort! Does Stafford Paul know?

Stafford Paul was disappointed to not join us !
Sadly Stafford to Brigg is a bit of a challenge (unless you live in Sheffield) with only one train a day !

Yes,
Stafford depart 7.50am, two changes, Brigg arrive 11.07am.
Brigg depart 1.49pm, two changes, Stafford arrive 5.20pm.
£63.15 with a railcard.
Wem’s much easier, and cheaper.

Not as much a bargain as the 50p each way we got then !

Glad you read it, Victoria, we really enjoyed the bar and all of Brigg when we did that day trip by train. Highly tempted to return!
