THE BEST PART OF COMPLETING THE BEER GUIDE IS BEING ALLOWED TO DRINK PINTS IN PUBS LIKE THE SCHOLAR’S

September 2023. Scarborough.

Well, you can’t spend the equivalent of 13 and a third pints of OBB on your rail ticket getting to Scarborough and just do the two ticks. If I’d turned up a few days earlier I could have seen Glamorgan grind out a draw to keep Yorkshire in their rightful place at the foot of the County Championship (Div II).

Oddly, it didn’t occur to me to see what museums Scarbs has; perhaps Blackpool Jane can do that when the Tangerines next play in the Northern Premier League.

I was tempted by the Spoons,

but York Place’s quaint lane took me past George Michael’s Restaurant,

(no relation. Is It ?),

and I went back to my favourite pub in town, albeit a rating based on a swift half while Mrs RM was shopping 20 years ago.

At least, I think it was Scholar’s I always assume is my favourite, but it could have been Cellars. Who cares.

It’s a cracker. Very much a town pub, but with a charm about the management and those big hand pumps and beers you’ve heard of.

Dunno why I picked the Pale Rider, but it’s not been as ubiquitous in Sheff as you might think, and at £3.50 for a cool foamy pint was perhaps the bargain of the month.

Superb presentation, too.

Thursdays are quiet, Quiz nights sees it packed,

and while a soundtrack of Belinda Carlisle and Elton John may not suit everyone, it was being served up at that sweet spot at which you can hear it but still hear yourself, if that makes sense.

Now I’ve “completed” I’m at liberty to revisit as many classic pubs as I want.

And have a pint. Living the dream, mate. Until you see my GBG spreadsheet and what paltry progress I’ve made this last year.

  1. It’s almost 20 years since I was in Scarborough. But I do remember that Scholars was better than Cellars, although I think the latter had a good reputation as a real cider pub.

I keep on meaning to go back and do some cricket and/or pubs, but it’s finding the time. Retirement is so difficult to manage, especially for those of us who are actually past retirement age.
