THIS YEAR’S SPOOF WHAT PUB ENTRY REVEALED

August 2023. Sheffield.

I was hoping my walk back from Dore to the Blind Monkey would reveal some unknown treasures. It’s always embarrassing when those pesk beer tourists ask you what’s new and exciting in Sheffield and you realise you haven’t actually been to Ecclesall’s pubs yet.

Leaving the Prince of Wales, I consulted What Pub, a work of love and devotion aimed at guiding the weary to cask and keg.

“Future Restaurant” ? Wow, sound brilliant. No Real Ale, but of course one beer is often more than enough.

Tucked away on Dobbin Hill, I think this is it.

Sadly the owners weren’t in, possibly out buying bottles of Henderson’s or summat. I’ll go back later. Or complain to X-Y-Z branch.

I pressed on, noting the contrasting evangelism of this Ecclesall house,

and the gloriously brutal Trinity United Reform Church.

  1. Many years ago our Branch Secretary got into a bit of trouble for adding an entry at the “Horse and Shovel, Racecourse Road” in the diary page of What’s Brewing. Stafford had neither a pub or a street of that name.

    1. Sheffield has form on this.

I’d like to shake the hand of the council official – I surmise – who named the new road on which the then also new police HQ stood as Letsby Avenue.
