July 2023. Sheffield.
Please treat this as an experimental post. I want to know if it’s possible to do a 10 minute blog post after 4 pints in 90 minutes, when that 4th pint is Plum Porter in Spoons.

On Thursday night I felt in urgent need of live music.
If in doubt, try the Washington.

This is the pub bought by a member of Pulp a few years back. You know Pulp, used to be good now a tribute act to themselves.

There’s a lady bouncer at the door but I doubt I look like trouble.
There’s a decent cask choice but you don’t turn down Cwtch even when it’s Gold.
I’ve arrived late for Manchester noisemakers Duvet,

who have come all the way from Manchester, wherever that is, to shout at us about “sweaty dogs”.
I write their name down as Divan and Duvan, and recognise how lucky I am to hear great live music free with a lovely pint of cask.

The Washington isn’t packed, but live music keeps its heart beating, and when nostalgia fest Tramlines hits Sheff this weekend it’ll be the place to be.
Unless you’re dressed as a chicken, when Indie Go might be the place for you.

We dropped in for some live music at the Pelton in Greenwich (celebrity connection, run by the son of Glen Tillbrook I think ) The place was bouncing,we stood next to a cosy coal fire -it was Winter obvs &it was great fun.We didn’t notice until the credit card bill landed how much the drinks were -ouch !

Pauline,
That’s why they prefer, or insist on, card payment.
Robbing so and sos.

You would love the Old Shoe in Sheffield, Pauline. Perhaps not yet as cosy as some pubs but very classy with Sheffield pricing and space for some events.

I’m absolutely certain that I’d prefer Humphrey’s Old Boot in Chester where I had two pints of OBB two months ago today.

I like both, but they’re certainly extremes !

Folk, Blues Rock ,Prog Rock and Trad Jazz are the only suitable accompaniment to Real Ale and the dress code is handmade knitwear and a food particle beard.
1 pint of best bitter or two pints of a session ale can safely be consumed whilst listening to Suppers Ready

Punk goes well.

The pub where I have seen real ale stereotypes ,musical and sartorial, demonstrated most clearly is the Pelican in Gloucester

Alan,
Folk and heavy metal are the same thing. That’s what I learnt from the Discourse site recently.

Yes, it’s amazing what you learn on Discourse, isn’t it ?

No, the best accompaniment to real ale is the clatter of dominoes or the clack of bar billiards balls, Alan.

I think you make less typos when you’ve had a few beers, oddly.
