ESCAPING NIK KERSHAW IN ART NOUVEAU RIGA

May 2023.

The no doubt long awaited “modern architecture” post.

Full of Bronze Age Braggot and fish soup we set off on Thursday afternoon to see what the more modern Riga has to offer the tourist with more than the six hours that old folk on cruise ships get.

Well, lots of tall buildings,

a closed beer bar that was at one time the sole Latvian entry in the Good Beer Guide due to its Directors handpump*,

some more authentic cafes where folk where suits and drink unidentifiable red liquids that aren’t sours,

spoilt only by relentless 1984 pop.

The necklace of parks that starts at Bastejkalna are stunning, bar the controversial sculptures,

but it’s the art nouveau masterpieces along Alberta iela that really made me glad Mrs RM had just upgraded her phone.

Loads of frogs round here,

notably in Lidojošā varde where we seem to have temporarily moved from beer to a jug of fruit juice.

The sobriety wouldn’t last.
