If I had unlimited time I’d snip that Huawei* watermark off these few photos.**
If you don’t look closely you might thing it’s my copyright or something and be scared off nicking them, which you’re quite welcome to do (I don’t own the pubs or the people).
As it is you’re stuck with our Chinese friends for a little while.
From the New Sunderland, to the old, and the tight residential streets of Millfield, through what is known as the Simon Everitt University Trail. Most of the offending marks have been removed.
It was while reading BRAPA that I noticed he’d missed out on one of the giants of the Sunderland Pub Heritage scene.
The Mountain Daisy has sensibly dumped that cask stuff to limit the hordes of CAMRA visitors, but does at least appear to be open (contrary to expectation).
My sort of pub, but venturing into a keg estate pub of CAMRA note raises all sorts of issues.
Where will I sit ?
There’s only two folk in at 8pm, so I can sit where I like.
Will I be outed if I wander around aimlessly ?
No-one shows the slightest interest in me, which is reassuring and disappointing in equal measure.
Will I be shot if I take a photo ?
Not today. Given there’s no Almasty murk, what do I drink ?
“Pint of Guinness, please.”
“I’m sorry, we only have Carling, Strongbow and John Smiths“. (plus shots, of course)
Well, I do like an absence of choice.
It’s not bad, but it’s not great. The Carling of ales.
As for the heritage, I didn’t see much on my nosey, and if you think I’m asking a barmaid if she’ll let me in to see the secret room you don’t know me. Secret rooms are for the brave.
A bit like the Chi Chop Suey House, where I finally settled on my tea.
*I don’t know what you’re supposed to do with mobile phones but the camera is the best I’ve had.
** By April 2020 I’d worked out how to edit the photos to get shot of the watermark.

Best you’ve had! That camera is so good it’s made that John Smiths look quite attractive. Perhaps it’s got a ‘clear murk’ setting…

That Huawei watermark seems a shortsighted corporate decision: I see it on your blog and it gives me a negative impression of the whole company (whereas previously I had no impression at all!).
Something in me is eager to have a pint of John Smiths just to see how mediocre it really is. 😉

Very similar experience on my visit to the Mountain Daisy on 27 August 2017, except that I opted for the Strongbow. It was a Sunday evening and if I recall correctly when I entered around 2130 there were zero other punters, but the crowd had swelled massively to around six by the time I left.

Have visited other “winners” along Hylton Road on another occasion (07 October 2017) including the Railway Tavern, Oddie’s, and the unforgettable Kacey’s Bar where a pint of the house “Kacey’s Lager” was a bargain £1.60 a pint !

That looks like a classic pub, great pub name too. Pity no cask. Dave H posted pics from there recently. Definitely need to add it to my itinerary.

Lacings on that John Smith’s look terrific. What a classic pub… probably be shut in five years and a new micro will open on the site of an old vets or something called the removed testicles or such like
