Sadly, it’s too hot for me to do my night in Gifford today, and Scott tells me that Scotland is burning anyway.
So I’m stuck in Waterbeach listening to England wallop Ireland on TMS, and catching up with blogs. But don’t expect epic posts.
Continuing along the coast from Whitby to Robin’s Hood Bay, the Mousehole of the North, where the average age of visitor drops from 67 to 32.

I’m guessing that’s partly due to Whitby having more tea shops, but mainly it’s the scary descent that puts off the Harrogate set (see also: Staithes).

Startlingly, this is only my second visit, and a first since watching England v Sweden in the 2002 World Cup at the Victoria.
I’m guessing we had to carry two toddlers to the Dolphin back then (no pushchairs for us), which would have taken the wind out of sails a bit.
Unencumbered by tiny folk, RHB (as the kids call it) looked magical.

It’s a place you want to stop in every pub, but that won’t get the GBG ticked, will it ?
Pleasingly, and despite being closer to 67 than 32, I whizz past the hordes of pashminas on the way down to the Bay Hotel.

Well, I’m amazed Mrs RM missed this one in 2002. It looks gorgeous, doesn’t it.

Two levels, two bars. One has diners, one leads out to the patio. I’m intrigued by the bowls in front of the pumps, which could contain hops but actually it’s bangles (not S.Hoffs).

Unpretentious, polite and just Pubby enough to not feel like Southwold.
And just enough ale sold, hopefully without the need of tasters, to edge the Theakston up to NBSS 3, and make you feel very smug about life as you look out to sea with your pint.

And if this doesn’t make our American readers feel jealous, the next one will.
We’ve been jealous all morning. Stop slagging off Southwold! “Pubby enough to not feel like Southwold.” Remember the Lord Nelson!!

I never said it wasn’t, except when I knew Richard was listening π

I remember the Bay Hotel well from Mrs TSM and I spending our honeymoon there in 1992.
It was a long way from the reception in a Dudley Hansons pub but we just got there in time for a pint of Directors just turned closing time.
We managed a few other GBG pubs over the next few days.

RHB looks gorgeous, Martin. Your photos have sold it to me. Some of those steps might be a little steep for Mrs PBT’s atm, though.

Paul,
Yes, steep steps but our honeymoon there was some 25 years before my knees failed.
( Why does everyone keep getting me to mention my wonky knees ?)

Nothing wrong with your knees a pint of Banks’s Mild won’t solve.
