CRAFTY COLWYN

Next up in Colwyn Bay, the posh dining pub.

It must be disheartening for a northern town to not have its own Brunning & Pricey in 2019, but the Station does its best to compensate.

“Wait here” signs, Sunday carvery, free range children, gin, tapas, Prosecco contests.

Perhaps the worst shot on this blog

I really took against that white tiling, too.

No

Ossett? In Wales? Why?

The pub was packed, the staff were great, the Conwy First Class scored 1, coincidentally.

Choice over quality.

A decade ago we had excellent Lees in the social club and the Imperial.

No more.

Try the Lees pub on Menai Bridge

Still, Colwyn Bay has many charms, not all of them obvious to the Guardian reader on their way to Conwy.

Weird font
Almost mysterious tat

I had 20 minutes till the train to Llandudno, which by now seemed a different world.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Pubmeister, I knew about a preemptive hopportunity.

Craft comes to Colwyn

Yes, Black Cloak Tap is like Cloudwater without the beards.

Light, airy and far too pubby, especially with a rare outing for “Walk This Way“.

A middle-aged couple sampling the range, a young couple with a large canine slurping away.

Art shot

One of the things about total honesty is that I have to tell you I loved this Tap Room despite myself.

The young barman was astonishingly good. I hope my two lads develop social skills like his.

He even filled a bowl of water for Fido, who rated the Welsh tap as NWSS 3.5. The same as their homebrew, in fact.

Some pub where the dog gets served before the humans , eh!”

A GBG20 cert. You read it here second.

  1. Don’t short change Matt! Is “Walk This Way” really a rare outing? I hear it and “Sweet Emotion” often over here.

      1. “I had never heard of “Sweet Emotion”!
It was the Run DMC collaboration, that’s what we know.”

That explains it. Search YouTube for Sweet Emotion Aerosmith. 🙂

        Cheers

Oh and ta Dave. Haven’t thought of that song in years. Will download Sweet Emotion for my car song list. 🙂

      2. I made the assumption there it was Aerosmith. I hear it constantly. I do seem to recall the Run DMC version as well. Matt is a well mannered and talkative young man I met in Cambridge:)

  2. “free range children,”

Cooked on the range (stove) as opposed to deep fried?

“Perhaps the worst shot on this blog”

    I’d complain to the owner.

    “Choice over quality.”

Were there no plant pots in the smoke room?

No expression to it. Feels wooden. 🙂

“Yes, Black Cloak Tap is like Cloudwater without the beards.”

I thought the beards were de rigueur.

“especially with a rare outing for “Walk This Way“.”

    By Aerosmith or Run DMC?

“I hope my two lads develop social skills like his.”

They have a good mentor? 😉

  3. There’s a Brunning & Price in the posh southern uplands of Colwyn Bay called the Pen-y-Bryn, which I’m sure you must have been to as it’s a GBG regular.

Aerosmith have never really had a high profile over here and the only song of theirs you’re likely to hear in pubs is the Run DMC collaboration of “Walk This Way”.

Looks like someone tried to copy Bank Gothic by eye, but found the W impossible so just got another they used for another job.
