Two left in Hampshire, at either end of Emsworth.

Before I get there, one more lustful look at the Coal Exchange. Shoulda’ gone in.

Fans of traditional fonts (and garages) will enjoy Lillywhite Bros too.

The Lord Raglan isn’t shabby either,

though more for the setting by Slipper Mill Pond than the exterior.

Dozens of walkers eyeing up the posh boats and wishing they’d bought the famous salt and pepper chicken to eat by the river, as I recommend.

The Raglan itself is a plain all-rounder of a pub, with functional service and adequate beer range.

But the HSB was superbly rich and fruity (NBSS 3.5), and it’s hard to complain about a pub garden like this.

Anyone with an ounce of common sense would have walked back to Elmsworth station and took the short hop to Warblington to get to the Wheelwright’s Arms.

But I’m not anyone, and Warblington is clearly a made-up place, so I did the half hour slog to the edge of Havant, about which the less said the better.
One picture will tell you all you need to know about the Wheelwright’s.

Yes, it’s not Rochdale, is it ?
I was so shocked by the Ploughman Pricing Puzzle, my photo of the pumps is a bit wobbly.

“Which one should I drink then ?”
“This is pale and hoppy, this one is rich and fruity, this one…” said the lovely landlord.
“I’ll have that one” I said, closing my eyes and pointing at the Triple fff. It was decent.

And I got a collector card. All pub tickers like collectors cards.
Then I noticed the Upham insignia.
“Are you an Upham pub then ?”
“Oh yes, Punter is our biggest seller !”
Words fail me.
Anyway, job done.

Cut and dried case for a visit from the Ploughman’s Police: you’re nicked, matey!

At this rate you’ll be ready for a bit of Bass pub ticking before you start GBG 2019. 😄

£14.50 for a Ploughman’s? 😱😡

But it’s craft. Berkshire craft.

£14.50 and probably nothing like as good as the pork baps for £2.50 in the Great Western or beef stew for £2 in the Stile.

Well done- relentless progress! Looking forward to your end of month stocktake.

£14,50 for a ploughman’s! How do they get away with that? Upham.. I had a couple of pints of that in the White Hart in South Harting a few years ago along with two lovely scotch eggs. For some reason I still remember those mid day pints with fondness.

Hehe, fortunately for your readers, that’s seldom the case 🙂

“Slipper Mill Pond – don’t ask”
I’m guessing it’s not because a number of slippers (with feet still in them) have washed up on shore?
(unlike all of those sneakers with feet still in them washing ashore over here – no, really)

“and it’s hard to complain about a pub garden like this.”
Indeed.
“£14.50 !”
Indeed!
“my photo of the pumps is a bit wobbly.”
Considering it’s Warblington a wobbly photo is understandable. 🙂
“Words fail me.”
Well I never! (LOL)
Cheers

The Lord Raglan has won those most coveted of Retired Martin adjectives: “functional”, and “adequate”. 😉
Congratulations on completing Hampshire!

Thanks Mark. I was struggling for a neutral tone for the Raglan, it really wasn’t photogenic inside, but the garden is gorgeous.

Lillywhites might not dot their ‘i’s but the Mr Mercury sign is a rare sight sixty years after the National Benzole Company was taken over by Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd.

Loving the almost subliminal comment on the Marstons PLC branding exercise.

Gale’s HSB. Still a decent beer but not a patch on the old 5.2% version. Many happy memories of 4 pint lunches back in the 80’s in either The Spa, Mason’s or Bay Tree. All gone now of course.

Shows the regionalisation of the UK beer scene these days that Upham means nowt to me, then I check their website and see they have a reasonably sized estate. How many of these brewers have completely passed me by these days?

None that you need worry about, young Scott.

Not worried, just intrigued that any cask brewer can have built any sort of estate these days whilst being completely off my radar. They must be bigger than Donnington!!! Would you count them as a regional?

I guess your question was also result of Ploughmans Pricing trauma as well?
Me and Mrs GH went to Upham’s Running Horse near Winchester (I did a post), food was very nice, but Upham do seem to aim for the upmarket end with their dining pubs (bit like Brunning & Price perhaps? – though I haven’t been to one yet).
I think £14:50 for a Ploughman’s would make anyone wobbly though…
