THE VIEW FROM PORTSMOUTH HARBOUR

June 2024. Portsmouth.

A break from blogging about pubs for a second (and the next post is from a Spoons, which hardly counts according to many), as I luxuriate in the views across Gosport Harbour.

Once again, Portsmouth looks splendid leaving the hubbub of the Pembroke,

and heading past the underrated Cathedral,

back towards the ferry and the Spinnaker, the focal point that prevents you ever getting really lost in Pompey.

Hard to believe that town across the water is home to 82,000 souls, more than Walsall, Shrewsbury or Crewe, with half a dozen queueing for the 9pm return to Gosport, though a Dad and Lad were so drunk I feared that number might reduce to four at any moment.

Just as the best views of Newcastle are from Gateshead, and Slough from Maidenhead, so Gosport’s main attraction is the sight of the historic ships across the water, and Gosport greets you with a deserted bus station,

and bookshop with a particularly narrow focus.

But at least Knight’s Convenience Store is open till 10, and I’ve just enough time to pick up Mrs RM’s midnight feast before the bus arrives.

19 Crimes, but a failure to bring my wife a can of Rosé and bar of Cadbury’s isn’t one of them.
