BACK TO THE ‘BEACH

The move north just before Christmas was probably the biggest decision I’ve ever made, second only to choosing Crispy Shredded Beef over Crispy Chicken at Chung Hwa.

There’s nothing for you here” said Dad, ominously, and I took that as permission to finally leave the Flatland for the North. But I have endeavoured to get back every week, and expect I’ll stay over a couple of nights each time as rules allow, so I can get the folks out and about as well as ticking down south.

I popped back last week to take Mum for a doctors appointment, and wondered if I’d feel in any way nostalgic and misty-eyed about MY village with its 1980s sign, trendy new pizzeria, Proper Pub and Big Skies.

Well, no, not at all, though I did feel a pang of guilt that I didn’t nip in the garden at the Sun .

The Southworths may be more sentimental about the village green than I am.

Oddly, Waterbeach has some admirers from the heart of beery Sheffield who I’ve discovered on the dreaded Facebook.

Jo isn’t the first person who expected the Brewery Tap to be an actual brewery tap, albeit the assumption tends to be it’s for established Milton rather than tiny Pastore.

What a lovely place to live ?” Well, there’s a great pub, a good curry house-cum-guest house,

and a micro pub library with copies of the Beach News reporting on Parish Council shenanigans going back to 1881.

But the only essential feature, Chung Hwa apart (and it WAS as good as ever), is my parents garden.

I stayed over in the campervan, a mile away in Horningsea in what’s referred to as the Quy Walks Layby.

Baa Baa Toure seemed more sentimental than me.

NB No trip to the Sun this time, but I’ll be back inside after the 17th May, this time without the substantial meals.

  1. Not being sentimental since I can’t be on this topic, I still think growing old in your parent’s home is a pretty idyllic location. No matter how flat. What a beautiful village green.

  2. Our move down to Kent was a leap of faith -only done because I had no family left in Leeds (the in laws were not impressed though ! ) I do hanker after the Broad Acres but our life down here has been pretty good so it was the right thing to do & it made us all what we are today ,No Regrets (oh I love that Walker brothers song ! )

      1. Work -husband decided to leave his job in Harrogate & sadly found himself a bit on the old side when finding another locally (he was a 39 year old loss adjuster at the time ) On the grapevine he heard of a job -a home based loss adjuster in “The South east ” so he could decide where he wanted to live -looked at Sevenoaks (nasty Barratt house ) & Crawley -AWFUL & spotted a sign to Maidstone offering new houses for sale -the deed was done in a very short time. The home working didnt last long- he kept getting promoted (a sacking & a retirement ) & he worked in the City for several years -ample opportunities for “entertaining ” in Leadenhall Market -he had a beano !

      1. Exactly 😊. Mrs HH insisted accompany her around endless properties last year as: “value your opinion” 😂; ignoring protestations that completely trust in whatever she chose, and would happily rather be doing anything else. Thus, should any fault with her choice of New HH Towers emerge, the mutual acknowledgement of where blame lies is already settled. So far only one: when she slipped on floor and ricked a knee – why hadn’t I pointed this defect out, “because you know I don’t like laminated flooring” 😍.

I’m not sure if that reflects poorly or well on your decision to marry Mrs RM. 😉

“and expect I’ll stay over a couple of nights each time as rules allow, so I can get the folks out and about as well as ticking down south.”

A dutiful son, even if a minor ulterior motive is attached. 🙂

Not quite the same but, yes, don’t miss where I lived with me ma and da at all. But, when I did go back I at least went out for a beer!

“who I’ve discovered on the dreaded Facebook.”

Facebook does have its uses… or so I hear from my better half. 🙂

“Jo isn’t the first person who expected the Brewery Tap to be an actual brewery tap”

Pfft. Next they’ll be surprised when the Kings Arms or the Kings Head aren’t as advertised!

“and a micro pub library with copies of the Beach News reporting on Parish Council shenanigans going back to 1881.”

Blimey! All of those copies fit in that little shed?

“But the only essential feature, Chung Hwa apart (and it WAS as good as ever), is my parents garden.”

That’s… gorgeous. And it gives me some ideas for our yard come this winter.

Ok, now I understand why no trip for a sip this time.

    Cheers
