SHE’S GONE

Had you worried for a second, didn’t I ? Actually Mrs RM would probably have entered the divorce mode normally reserved for an argument in IKEA if I’d forced her to pop in Sheffield’s Queens Hotel for a pint of Wards.

Closed for 24 years before being demolished, without fanfare, this year.

Why did no-one send me an invitation* ?

I only noticed that Sheffield had lost an iconic landmark yesterday walking past some of James previous student residences on the way to complete his move to a permanent home five minutes from us the Blake. AND he finally got himself a job the same day so we can now finally kick him out. (joking).

It’s gone !” I said, confusing James, who had been much more taken with the grim grandeur of Robert Neill, which Kentish Paul will be thrilled to know survives, for now.

The Queens has gone the way of all Sheffield brick; conversion after an indecent wait into MORE student housing.

The industrial area north of centre, south of Kelham seem to be favoured by Chinese students, who prop up the Asian food stores and will no doubt flock back to the Crow and Kmax Karaoke Bar (Abbeydale Moonshine, possibly).

Don’t panic, grime lovers; there’s still loads of crumbling architecture left in Sheffield to enjoy. Though come to think of it, I didn’t notice these windows near Angel Street on my last trip. Where have they gone ? Will will know.

*The skips are filling up outside the Hillsborough House near me; I do hope there’s no Bass memorabilia I’ve missed.

    1. These people who go on about “rights and responsibilities” don’t seem to be too bothered about the latter for big property owners do they?

  1. I haven’t walked that way since my last visit to the Crow Inn on 23 October. Another landmark gone, but it was always inevitable, given the state of the building.

Don’t know anything about those windows from the Black Swan. Did you want them for your greenhouse?

(whether that’s meant for you or James, I’m not sure) 😉

Survives? It’s on bloody life support!

Is there no end to that?
