LITTLE SHEFFIELD

Last Friday (though it feels like an eternity ago) you left me at the top of a giant mountain off Abbeydale Road, staring down at the crumbling Picture House.

I got down safely, clearly, otherwise you wouldn’t have Guess the Pub to entertain and torment you. On the Saturday I took James back, like in Lost, to explore more of the area commonly known as the rather snappy “Nether Edge on the Abbeydale Road leading to London Road via Highfield (wherever that is) and then to Little Sheffield, y’know, the takeaways stretch“.

All the shops look like this;

Well, not quite, but it’s a string of Asian stores and Italian delis that I could lazily compare with certain quarters of North Bristol but actually what came to mind was Penny Lane in Liverpool.

A lovable mix of grandeur, tat, useful things like “Swifties”, kebabs and unexpected craft beer.

Quite a few bottle shops and what I concluded was the Abbeydale Tap except it isn’t.

Coles Corner is EXACTLY the sort of place I came to Sheffield for; Mrs RM will do a crawl of all the Italian cafes and have a tiramisu in EVERY one to celebrate the end of Lockdown.

So much to look forward to, including the more robust looking Barry’s Bar (top), a mystery Marston beer at the Old Crown,

and the London Road Club, where life membership entitles you to unlimited cask Magnet from the barrel for ยฃ25 a month with your chip butty.

Later today we MAY find out when all these treasures will be ours to enjoy again.

  1. I used to work on Abbeydale Road, but Cole’s Corner started up after I took redundancy, so I wasn’t aware of that one. Never been in Barry’s, and the Old Crown is disappointing – though it’s been through a few different hands and I see the lease is available again. Abbeydale Tap & Snap replaced the previous Volpe just over a year ago – again, this was one I missed through not coming to this part of town every day, so it’s yet another benefit to me from Martin’s arrival in Sheffield. I was looking into the possibility of starting my own micropub on Abbeydale Road four years ago – at that time there were only two bars between the Broadfield and Jabarwocky (Picture House Social and Hop Hideout (which is now in the town centre)). Now there are eight!

  2. “Nether Edge on the Abbeydale Road ”

Nether Edge. Is that similar to where one’s bikini bottom is too small to completely cover the waxed bits of one’s nethers?

“All the shops look like this;”

Complete with people queuing outside thanks to Covid. ๐Ÿ™‚

    “useful things like โ€œSwiftiesโ€,”

(looks down at the photo of Swifties). Blimey. That looks like something out of Steptoe and Son.

“Quite a few bottle shops and what I concluded was the Abbeydale Tap except it isnโ€™t.”

I hear you might be able to sit outside there come April. ๐Ÿ™‚

That reminds me. You might want to check this out:

You can change the sliders on the right, then click the right pointing arrow to start that particular background noise. Add in the music on the left and… voila!

“a mystery Marston beer at the Old Crown,”

Not until someone takes over the lease, according to the signage on the left.

“Later today we MAY find out when all these treasures will be ours to enjoy again.”

Whoops. Hopefully I didn’t give anything away in my post. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      2. “Just like Barbara Dickson and Elaine Page.”

        I’m a lesbian trapped in a man’s body?

Oh, wait… I thought you meant Ellen Page. ๐Ÿ™‚
