We parked up next to the scary abandoned church, and set off down the hill.
Five minutes later, she turned round, and saw me taking the killer shot of the Hallcar Tavern.
“Currently closed” says WhatPub, a generous interpretation. But NOTHING is irredeemable.
Down toward the iconic B6082 there’s a hive of activity, the engineering works pumping out the products that fuel our economy while the rest of us sit at home in our underpants drinking sour DIPAs, complaining about how much traffic is on the road during Lockdown.
At last ! I stumble upon the once mighty Corner Pin, GBG stalwart 20 years ago before it became unwise to have 4 pints at lunchtime while operating a lathe. Will’s pics here are great.

Round the corner you find “Aggressive Security“,
probably guarding the secret recipe for the £3.70 lasagna and chips at MJ’s Snack Shack. £3.70 wouldn’t buy you a coffee in Cambridge.
I’m in full flow now, scouring the What Pub map for more closed treasure. TH Michaels deserve credit for skilful retention of the Crown‘s sign and Pubmaster lamp, both of which would look great on our house. Mrs RM disagreed.
It’s a scruffy but loveable area of the city, rather let down by the world’s biggest collection of Oranjeboom cans defacing the Pocket Park of Petre Street. Which is easy for you to say.
The only pub suvivor, which will therefore be getting an early visit from me to sample Carling at the Normanton , whose Facebook photo is better than mine at 11am on a rainy January day.
What a thrilling walk.
Sadly, nothing remained of the bucolic sounding Tea Gardens Hotel on Grimesthorpe Road.
So it’s a good job we have Will Larter around in 2013.

Even as a high school student, I thought “Crushed by the Wheels of Industry” sounded like lyrics invented by people intent on mocking Heaven 17’s blend of synth-pop and politics. Still, a more interesting song than most, it cannot be denied!
That Pubmaster lamp is a thing of beauty; I would be proud to have it attached to the exterior of my house somewhere, given the opportunity. 🙂

There’s no denying that “The Luxury Gap” was a great LP, but by late ’83 into ’84 the singles from the UK’s popsters were a bit clunky to this 19 year old. See: “That was then but this is now” by ABC, “War Song” by Culture Club, “I’ll Fly For You” by Spandau Ballet, “Wild Boys” by Duran Duran. All Mudgie favs, of course.

“That Pubmaster lamp is a thing of beauty” and a fitting reminder of twenty years ago when Pubmaster bid £485m for Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries and threatened the Banks’s Brewery in Wolverhampton. .

Thanks ! I think I’d have noticed that if it was still there, I thought it might now be the newer houses on the right though the wrong street number. It isn’t what springs to mind when you read “Tea Gardens Hotel”, is it !

Since we speak English and not Italian, maybe we should eat lasagnas and spaghettos, rather than lasagne and spaghetti?
