COBWEB BRIDGE

Great news this morning about the Oxford/Astra Zeneca Vaccine. Hopefully by the time it reaches me it’ll be available in the form of a murky DIPA produced in Neepsend. My parents get their second Pfizer shot this Sunday so they’ll soon be able to return to their hedonistic lifestyle; staying at home, pottering about in the garden, ordering on-line.

In the meantime more “On my walk” joy for you. It’s keeping me sane, anyway, and I’ve discovered a new bridge.

Really. James told me he’d never heard of Cobweb Bridge, a vital pedestrian cyclist connection between the swanky Quayside and edgy Wicker. And it’s not marked on Bing Maps, either, so you get rare Google images today.

Our wander took us past those gorgeous Sheffield mash-ups of ghost sandwich signs and anime.

The route to the basin at Victoria Quayside takes you past “Proper Sheffield Shopping“, where Meadowhall is a Spoons, the Moor Market is a Sam Smiths and Exchange Street Upper Level is a Holt pub in Weaste.

I didn’t really know Sheffield had a Quayside, stuck out of the way just above the station next to the Best Western, that Ember Inn of hotel chains.

Sheffield doesn’t make the most of it’s waterside, I often think, and I’m disappointed to realise The Laughing Gravy isn’t a Yorkshire Pudding themed floating micropub. It would be, if it was in Middlesbrough.

A nice little composition shot for fans of different transport options in the Basin;

James was as disappointed at the closure of the ice cream van (all the way from Ongar, Essex) as I was at the closure of the Dorothy Pax, a newish bar with the sort of beer range that gets you in the GBG 99% of the time outside Sheffield.

To the bridge. Views of the giant Tesco and crumbling buildings of Burngreave, with a sneak view of the Don Saw Mills artwork.

And then to the delightfully bouncy walkway underneath the old railway arches. That’s an actual spider, you know. It really needs a handpump halfway along though.

With nowhere to sit and watch the world go by in Burngreave, whether pub, artisanal cafe or curry house, it’s back home via Grimesthorpe Road South.

Keep going, folks.

  1. Yes, brilliant news about the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, but some real dumb-arse questions being asked by some of the journalists at the news briefing that is taking place, as I type.

Good news too about your mum and dad, and good news as well, given that this latest vaccine will be much easier to store and distribute.

      1. “improving our knowledge and risk awareness” reminds me of twenty years ago when my job was Health and Safety.

Was that Bridge named after a pub in Boscastle ?
Just as logical as a shipping forecast area. .

    (slow golf clap)

“And it’s not marked on Bing Maps, either, so you get rare Google images today.”

Ahem. Google has it. Oh, wait, you said that. 🙂

As for the map, at the top there’s ‘Affordable Furnishings’. Really? Like anyone would start a business saying ‘Unaffordable Furnishings’. That would tip of the local constabulary that it was most likely a Mafia front wouldn’t it?

“and Exchange Street Upper Level is a Holt pub in Weaste.”

And in the photo below it says ‘Alternative Fashion Shop’. Is that code for ‘underpants for those that drink at home’? That’s getting up there with ‘Affordable Furnishings’. Blimey!

“Sheffield doesn’t make the most of it’s waterside,”

Oh dear. Drop the apostrophe on it’s. 😉

    It’s missing a horse… and a jet pack.

“as I was at the closure of the Dorothy Pax, a newish bar with the sort of beer range that gets you in the GBG 99% of the time outside Sheffield.”

Does the lettering on the glass door say ‘show underpants’?

“It really needs a handpump halfway along though.”

    I take it that’s Cobweb… bridge?

“it’s back home via Grimesthorpe Road South.”

Ah. Ouroboros with an African theme by the looks of it.

    Cheers
