THE MYSTERIOUS MALIN BRIDGE

With Sheffield holding resolutely in Tier 3, just as Cambridge slides into the darkness of Tier 4 (where you can’t even LOOK at pubs), I can still bring you reports on my urban walks until pubs return.

This one takes you down to the Rivelin Valley and back via the mysterious Malin Bridge, the end of the tram line.

There is, of course, little mysterious about Malin Bridge, bar the fact that the walk took an hour when I did it with James and nearly 3 weeks when Mrs RM joined me today.

James admired the view; Mrs RM focused on the comparative features of the houses,

and I was more interested in just how many pubs round Walkley I’d been to over the last 20 years. Some are no more,

some like the Cottage are clinging on,

and some like the Holly Bush will surely be tempting us back with their Tetley soon.

The Rivelin Valley offers great views across Sheffield and into the Peak, It also offered 5 litres of Bradfield’s Belgian Blue for £19, but I wasn’t lugging one of those cans up the hill.

Malin Bridge itself offers car wash, bumper repair, “Old Skool” barbers,

and more Bradfield Blonde in the Anvil and the Bridge.

Plus 60 gins.

Mrs RM looked wistfully at the tram parked across the road, but I drove her on, back up the hill to home.

And as we slumped over the finishing line, 627 calories down, I think in my heart of hearts she knows it was worth it.

    1. I feel a bit of a fraud, not being able to go inside the pubs for you. Hopefully you’ll be able to link these the scene-setting posts to the interior posts in due course. I’m keen to find out if the pubs outside the GBG are worth you visiting.

      1. That will be a very interesting exercise. We always throw a few nonGBG pubs into our crawls. Often they are a bit more raucous than GBG pubs. And the cask often isn’t as good…

      2. Ah, “racuous”. That’s the word, Dave. I guess the problem is you’ll probably only manage one night in Sheffield and you’re spoilt for choice. Always good to throw a wild card into the mix to see how it compares with the GBG picks.

      3. On the fall 2021 route Joan and I have two nights in Sheffield. We’ll see whether that happens with Covid still raging. My brother may make that trip too.

      1. Scott,
Yes, I think Boris said it would be about twenty miles long but not wide enough to incorporate the garden he planned for his bridge across the Thames.

      1. Does anyone else remember the ‘Ace of Clubs’ branding of the Federation Brewery long ago, and their “guaranteed gravity” boast ?

And you say you know too much about MY better half! 🙂

I kind of like that one.

“but I wasn’t lugging one of those cans up the hill.”

Where’s those strapping young sons when you need them.

    ““Old Skool” barbers,”

Matthew could certainly give them a run for their money!

    You’re a brave man.

    You and my think alike!
