ALCONBURY BYPASSED

Greetings from Locked-down Waterbeach, where the nearest I’ve got to a pub recently is this fine exhibit in our local garden centre;

I wish there really was a pub that looked like The Wesley. Those blokes in the West End Tap are much too close; typical micropub.

Just the lone pub in Alconbury; I’ll definitely visit the Manor House for you when Lockdown lifts on the 2nd. It MIGHT have Doom Bar.

Though it didn’t when Roger Protz reviewed it for his excellent book on the Great North Road coaching inns.

If you untick the “Open Pubs only” filter for Alconbury it looks a bit different;

FIVE pubs ! How did a village of less than 3,000 manage that ?

An intriguingly named hotel, too..

(there’s an Adult store” just up the road in Sawtry, what is it with Huntingdonshire ?).

Well, it used to be home to RAF Alconbury, and a stop on the Great North Road for folks ticking the pubs in Roger Protz’s great book.

Here’s the A1 from underneath. It’s the quietest place under the sun.

As Roger writes, Alconbury is an attractive village crossed by brooks and streams.

Untroubled by traffic, untroubled by commerce, bar an army of painters and decorators on every roof in the High Street.

A sign on my I-Phone map said “vantage point“. So I stood and stared.

And then it started to rain.

If the rain, and the Lockdown, ever stops, I’ll visit that pub and then venture to Vinegar Hill. But I’ll stop short of the Tease II Hotel.

    Judging by the size, I’m sure they do tasters. 😉

    “Those blokes in the West End Tap are much too close; typical micropub.”

    And wide open doors in that weather! Look at all the newly fallen snow!

    “FIVE pubs ! How did a village of less than 3,000 manage that ?”

    That’s 600 per pub. Would be a bit crowded.

    “Well, it used to be home to RAF Alconbury”

    That explains the ‘adult store’. 😉

    “Here’s the A1 from underneath. It’s the quietest place under the sun.”

    If it’s underneath the A1, how can it be under the sun?

    “crossed by brooks and streams.”

    Exactly what is the difference between a brook and a stream?

    “But I’ll stop short of the Tease II Hotel.”

    I’m guessing that’s the ‘adult store’? 😉

    Cheers

      That explains a lot.

      NB Brook starts with a “b”.
